Statement of Interest: Deep Listening Study Group with Ali – Spring 2026

This is a mini-application to join a Deep Listening™ seminar/study group, hosted by Ali Champlin. Deep Listening™ refers to the practice developed by composer Pauline Oliveros, a heightened state of awareness that involves listening to all sounds—external, internal, and environmental—with intense focus, moving beyond mere hearing to conscious, embodied engagement, fostering creativity, connection, and understanding of the sonic world and self. 

Things to Know:

• There’s no cost to participate, with the exception of optional reading materials.
• As this seminar represents the teaching practicum portion of my bid for Deep Listening certification, participants will be invited to evaluate the sessions from time to time. Continuous feedback will be welcomed. I will also be sharing feedback and meeting notes with my instructors and evaluators. 
• The seminar will spread over 5-6 sessions, dates and times TBD, but most likely on a bi-weekly schedule. Ultimately the meeting dates will depend on the evaluation schedule, and the cohort of participants.
• As you likely know, I’m based in Barcelona and I would love to host this IRL in person, yet I also want to open the opportunity to friends worldwide, so it will likely take place online (over jitsi for example) or in a hybrid style, depending on who is joining, in the end.

It’s very likely that I’ll have more applications than the 8 places available. I will need to select with priority given to the following:

• Ability to commit to attending all or most sessions. Definitely, I know that things come up, and nobody will be shamed for missing a meeting – I just want to do what I can to make sure that if we start with 8 participants, we finish with at least 5, not 2 or 3.
• Location: If 8 people are willing and able to meet virtually, this will be preferred to a hybrid format. If 8 people are willing and able to meet in person, this will also be preferred to a hybrid format. 
• Willingness to be present in documentation. (More info below.)
• Scheduling feasibility: I’m looking for 8 people with overlapping availability, though I know that would be like finding 8 unicorns. 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄

I will be required to submit a short video recording from one or more sessions for justification and review by my evaluators. These recordings will be clearly announced and anyone can opt out of being visible (IRL or virtually) during those moments, but I'll need at least a few participants who are comfortable with that.
